Popular 904 Series gets a power boost.

With more than 100,000 2.8 and 3.6 litre engines already in operation around the world, Perkins has announced a power uplift to the popular 3.6 litre variant.

From March 2025, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) taking the 3.6 litre will have the option of boosting their machine’s power by six percent, with a rise from 100 kW up to 106 kW, along with a three percent increase in torque from 550 Nm to 566 Nm.

Evolution not revolution

In production since May 2019, the Perkins® 904 Series can be found powering applications in the agricultural, industrial, material handling and construction sectors such as excavators, telehandlers, dumpers and pumping equipment.

The 2.8 and 3.6 litre engines have proved to be a ‘game-changer’ for many customers, thanks to their high-power density and torque, giving OEMs the opportunity to move to smaller, more compact engines.

“We’ve utilised our learning from the current engines and the data analytics from extensive real-world usage to look at how we can further optimise the range for our customers,” said Perkins’ James Gardiner. “We’ve optimised the fuel system to improve the combustion, which has enabled us to get more performance from the engine to give more power and torque from the same footprint, to meet our customers’ needs.

“The new 106 kW variant of the 3.6 litre engine is ideally suited to applications that need more power in a compact package,” added James. “What’s more, the standard offering from factory comes with EMAT aftertreatment to minimise installation costs for the OEM.”

The 904J-E36TA has also been fitted with a new 12 plate oil cooler to improve the durability and reliability of the engine, while high efficiency fuel filters improve altitude capability. The engine meets EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and Japan 2014 emissions standards.

Fuel flexibility

As with other Perkins engines in the current range, for end users looking to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, the 904 Series can, subject to the fuel used meeting Perkins’ fuel specifications*, be run on 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), biomass to liquid (BTL) and gas-to liquid (GTL).

“We’ve always had high expectations for the 2.8 and 3.6 litre engines and since their introduction they’ve met our expectations and more,” said James. “Our global customer base quickly appreciated how the 2.8 and 3.6 litre models could add real value to the productivity and performance of their machines and we’re confident this increased power offering will also meet their expectations.”
